Philadelphie a passé une bonne soirée aux prix, y compris une victoire vendredi samedi dimanche pour un restaurant exceptionnel.
La Fondation James Beard à but non lucratif a été créée il y a plus de 30 ans, peu de temps après la mort du "pionnier de la gastronomie" James Beard, "pour célébrer, soutenir et élever les personnes derrière la culture alimentaire américaine".
La première cérémonie de remise des prix a eu lieu en 1991.
La Fondation James Beard a été embourbée dans la controverse au cours des dernières années.
Les prix dans de nombreuses catégories clés ont été brusquement annulés en 2020 au milieu du bouleversement pandémique de l'industrie et des problèmes d'éthique et de diversité parmi les nominés, et ils sont restés en pause en 2021 pendant les travaux de la fondation sur un nouveau cadre de récompenses.
Les prix de l'année dernière ont été les premiers décernés dans le cadre de nouvelles politiques et procédures et d'un nouveau code d'éthique déclenché par des allégations de mauvais comportement des chefs et de manque de diversité.
Cette année, le processus utilisé pour contrôler les mauvais comportements a généré sa propre controverse, un chef, Timothy Hontzas, révélant qu'il avait été disqualifié et un autre, Sam Fore,raconte au New York Timesqu'elle a fait l'objet d'une enquête mais qu'elle n'a pas été disqualifiée. La polémique a été reconnue lors de l'émission. "Cette catégorie a apporté plus de drame qu'un concert de Mariah Carey", a déclaré l'animateur de télévision Monti Carlo avant d'annoncer le meilleur chef : Sud, catégorie. Le nom de Hontzas a été lu aux côtés de ceux des autres nominés pendant le spectacle.
La gagnante de la catégorie Sud, Natalia Vallejo, est la première native de Porto Rico à remporter un prix James Beard.
La fondation a défendu ses nouvelles procédures éthiques.
